The latter happened four years ago, when I handed over a book to her with <a href="http://thrownscabbard.blogspot.com/2011/03/note-in-authentic-beauty.html" target="_blank">a slip bearing my "poem of intent."</a><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today, I tried to present to her a series of surprises which included a handing over (again) of the very same book but with an additional slip pasted inside the back cover. I wrote for her another poem as a birthday gift.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Another Nine on March 9</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In front of a chow fan bowl and a siomai pair</div>
<div>
I slid a book, depicting a girl with blonde hair</div>
<div>
At the back were notes, each in a rhyme</div>
<div>
Listed were 9 reasons why you should be mine</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Amazed and shocked, you couldn't eat</div>
<div>
But at least I received your “yes” so sweet</div>
<div>
After a year and a quarter, and so much prep</div>
<div>
We vowed to God a love parted only by death</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So here I am once again drafting celebrations</div>
<div>
Of how God blessed me beyond expectations</div>
<div>
That because of my wife, both lovely and loving</div>
<div>
I can look up to God, praising and glorifying</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One. My family was also yours so deeply dearly</div>
<div>
You honored my father when he left us lonely</div>
<div>
You nurse Nanay and cook for Kuya Manny</div>
<div>
Even my nieces grow with you so confidently</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Two. You burn more time serving than shopping</div>
<div>
Your braided hair is grounded upon your obeying</div>
<div>
And your holiness is brighter than your earring</div>
<div>
Cause your hope in Christ is your prettiest adorning</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Three. To my shame, it’s some of you and most of me</div>
<div>
For you have seen how low can your husband be</div>
<div>
My temper, my impatience, my reckless immaturity</div>
<div>
But you still paint me with honor and immense dignity</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Four. We both pledged to display Ephesians 5:32</div>
<div>
I struggle gravely to be like Christ the Head to you</div>
<div>
But it’s crystal clear as you live to me like the Body</div>
<div>
What more amazes me is how you submit joyfully</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Five. From financial scarcity to delay of pregnancy</div>
<div>
You raise the banner high for God’s sovereignty</div>
<div>
You mastered the marriage of worship and waiting</div>
<div>
Believing firmly that God, for our good, is working</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Six. Fruits have multiplied since I herald beside thee</div>
<div>
As fire needs fuel, I also need my partner in ministry</div>
<div>
My pulpit is unfounded apart from grace and mercy</div>
<div>
And I relish God’s grace everytime you pray for me</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Seven. I must admit that you appear so charming</div>
<div>
When you tend for souls, causing heaven to rejoicing</div>
<div>
From Sunday school to cell group to counselling</div>
<div>
No one but God is prouder than your husband clapping</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Eight. When I read Proverbs 31, 10 to before 32</div>
<div>
I always end up smiling as I think gratefully of you</div>
<div>
You’re the chief reason why I find these words as true</div>
<div>
Why should I desire rubies when I have my enough in you?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Nine. We are united in our single passion who is GOD</div>
<div>
A passion taught to us neither by flesh nor by blood</div>
<div>
To magnify the Triune GOD is the only and highest aim</div>
<div>
How can’t I love the woman who made it easier to attain?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We may grow older and our faces be carved with lines</div>
<div>
But we will stick together where Christ’s glory shines</div>
<div>
We’ll pursue heavenly treasures and dig spiritual mines</div>
<div>
And continue to discover jubilations that we write in nines.</div>

<br />
What would I do without you in my life<br />
You’re drawing nearer but I’m kicking you out<br />
You pour out Your blessing, never ending, You don’t let me down<br />
What's going on in my stubborn mind<br />
I'm now giving up my life in Your hands<br />
And I'm so guilty, Lord forgive me, this is my cry<br />
<br />
My heart I surrender<br />
And in you I trust<br />
Your mercy and love is what I’ve found<br />
<br />
'Cause all of me<br />
Loves all of you<br />
Love your Words and all your patience,<br />
Servant-like Sovereign obedience<br />
In Your majesty,<br />
I'll give my all to you<br />
You're the end and the beginning<br />
I exalt Your Supreme Being<br />
So I give you all of me<br />
I worship Your De-i-ty, oh<br />
<br />
How many times do I have to fail you<br />
Even when I’m trying, I still hurt you<br />
The world is pulling me down, You’re around to lift my hope<br />
You're my Savior, You're my Lord<br />
Lord of perfection, my Helper and Cord<br />
I can't stop singing, I’m lifting this love song for you<br />
<br />
My heart I surrender<br />
And in you I trust<br />
Your mercy and love is what I’ve found<br />
<br />
'Cause all of me<br />
Loves all of you<br />
Love your Words and all your patience,<br />
Servant-like Sovereign obedience<br />
In Your majesty,<br />
I'll give my all to you<br />
You're the end and the beginning<br />
I exalt Your Supreme Being<br />
So I give you all of me<br />
I worship Your De-i-ty, oh<br />
<br />
Christ, I’m not able, Your grace fills my heart<br />
Praising You with all I have<br />
<br />
'Cause all of me<br />
Loves all of you<br />
Love your Words and all your patience,<br />
Servant-like Sovereign obedience<br />
In Your majesty,<br />
I'll give my all to you<br />

First Corinthians 12:11 says, "All these [gifts] are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually <i>as he wills</i>" (ESV, insertion and emphasis mine). GOD the Holy Spirit sovereignly apportions gifts. It was in His sovereign rule why I often don't hit notes when I sing. It was in His sovereign rule why I have more fingers than the chords I can play without looking at a guitar chord chart. It was in His sovereign rule why I am unsure if I write a quarter rest correctly. I do not have the gift of music -- I do not do well with music. And GOD has prepared me for some other work.<br />
<br />
However, as a pastor, I believe GOD has put in my heart a desire to guide the church into a congregational singing with GOD-centered, Christ-treasuring, Spirit-filled, Scripture-saturated songs. I have this longing to pen Biblically rich statements following music metrical indexes and use tunes of known hymns with such meters. May the grace of GOD enable me to do so. But for now, let us do a simple honing by trans-tuning the much admired modern day hymn <i><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Christ_Alone" target="_blank">In Christ Alone</a></i> to a hymn-exposition of Psalm 23, <i><a href="http://www.hymnary.org/hymn/UMH/128" target="_blank">He Leadeth Me</a></i>.

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>The Hypostatic Union</b></span><br />
By: Shai Linne<br />
<br />
<i><b>Chorus</b></i><br />
I know it's deep but when you peep you'll find it's dense<br />
Jesus both God and man, two 100%s<br />
Fully divine, fully human <br />
Introducing: The Hypostatic Union (repeat)<br />
<br />
<i><b>Verse 1</b></i><br />
Our topic of discussion is beyond human comprehension<br />
The infinite God has made a super condescension<br />
The kind of entrance nobody could have anticipated<br />
Precipitated by the evil we participated<br />
In- through Adam and Eve our first kin<br />
Cursed when they committed the first sin<br />
Only if you have the Holy Spirit's antennas<br />
Can you truly understand fallen man's dilemma<br />
See, only a human can substitute for human lives<br />
But only God can take the wrath of God and survive<br />
See the humanly unsolvable obstacle?<br />
With God all is plausible, nothing's impossible<br />
True haters'll fight it but the story is certain<br />
Two natures united in one glorious person<br />
Jesus, the God-Man, official soul reaper<br />
The hypostatic union- it gets no deeper<br />
<br />
[Repeat Chorus]<br />
<br />
<i><b>Verse 2</b></i><br />
The Son of God: 100% divinity<br />
Self-existent second Person of the Trinity<br />
Magisterial Imperial at the helm<br />
Infinitely transcending this material realm <br />
He's so original, getting to know Him is pivotal<br />
Behold the invincible prototypical Holy Principal<br />
Possessor of all divine attributes<br />
The omnis, wisdom, grace, beauty, love, wrath and truth<br />
He's the One that all creation was made through<br />
And by Him, the earth's foundation was laid, too<br />
Ask the angels, they saw it on pay-per-view<br />
Created Satan too, matter of fact He created you <br />
And nothing can escape Jesus' sovereign rule<br />
From the farthest galaxy to the smallest molecule<br />
So who deserves to gain fame?<br />
By the word of His power the universe is maintained<br />
In other words, put the cosmos back on the shelf<br />
Without Christ, reality would collapse on itself<br />
Jesus, the marvelous Author of all consciousness<br />
Beyond what the sharpest biologist acknowledges<br />
He needs no archeologists or smart apologists<br />
He sees all hearts: Omnipresent Cardiologist<br />
Master of Logic, Macrocosmic Novelist<br />
Following any other god is just preposterous!<br />
<br />
[Repeat Chorus]<br />
<br />
<i><b>Verse 3</b></i><br />
The Son of Man 100% humanity<br />
The mind stretches to understand how can it be?<br />
You gotta see what He does<br />
Becoming what He wasn't while never ceasing to be what He was<br />
Is your mind flipping? That got you tripping? Me too<br />
But the Scripture is true- peep Philippians 2<br />
By faith we believe this amazing Jesus<br />
Who made Uranus and Venus became a fetus<br />
It's such a secret that few if anybody knew it<br />
Months later, He's covered in amniotic fluid<br />
The subject of the gospels, praise of Apostles<br />
Armed with eye sockets, arm pits and nostrils?<br />
Who is this Jesus? God clothed in human weakness<br />
Super sweetness and peace for the true believers<br />
See the One who never tires knocked out sleeping<br />
See the Source of eternal joy weeping<br />
Which one can explain how the Son abundant with fame<br />
Who made thunder and rain now has hunger pains?<br />
See the Creator of water become thirsty<br />
On the cross when He saves from the slaughter the unworthy<br />
My awe should be sky high and I ought to just cry, "Why?"<br />
with water in my eyes when the Author of Life dies<br />
Raised on the third, God man- soul seeker<br />
The hypostatic union- it gets no deeper<br />
<br />
[Repeat Chorus]<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNsnaqVz6dhJpNl9kWFboMYLc7Prok9Ya5chAD8WaXROrJHBJ-9prCyBLqrmBAf8rre4eS591-q4VTOdCv4iq60PnZ3kjxHFFu1jdAjOqRwSALUnIBX3yn1Ak0-OL8rr0fKOoX_Y82zQR7/s1600/CrossGClef.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNsnaqVz6dhJpNl9kWFboMYLc7Prok9Ya5chAD8WaXROrJHBJ-9prCyBLqrmBAf8rre4eS591-q4VTOdCv4iq60PnZ3kjxHFFu1jdAjOqRwSALUnIBX3yn1Ak0-OL8rr0fKOoX_Y82zQR7/s200/CrossGClef.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
Well, I love hymns. I love these God-glorifying, Christ-centered, Spirit-filled, Bible-saturated hymns. I love how they are packed with valuable doctrinal truths expressed in rhymes and poetry. I love how they are designed for congregational worship. I love how they transcend from generations to generations but remain fresh in their message.<br />
<br />
And another admirable attribute of hymns is that they are written with a structured metric system. This means that a hymn can be sung even when the tune is unfamiliar as long as the hymn is of the same meter with a familiar tune.<br />
<br />
When I was still unaware of this structure, I slightly deject when I browse a hymnal and glance at the great words of hymns like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Baxter" target="_blank">Richard Baxter</a>'s "<a href="http://cyberhymnal.org/htm/l/b/lbelongs.htm" target="_blank">Lord, It Belongs Not to My Care</a>" or the Calvinist-appealing "<a href="http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh341.sht" target="_blank">I Sought the Lord</a>" simply because I cannot sing them due to my ignorance of their tune. Such a grace from God that hymns have meters and that I was instructed of such metric system.<br />
<br />
We can take as an example a grandly Theocentric hymn "<a href="http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/i/i/iigowise.htm" target="_blank">Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise</a>." Although I do not really know its original tune, the hymnal says it is of meter 11 11.11 11 which is the same meter for the Christmas hymn "<a href="http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/a/w/awaymang.htm" target="_blank">Away in a Manger</a>." We can therefore take the words of the former hymn and sing it to the tune of the latter one. And here it goes...<br />
<br />

The central coordinating body of the United Methodist Church
is known as the Connectional Table (CT). It consists of about 59 United
Methodist leaders excluding staff). There are 47 voting members. It is the only
group meeting regularly between general conferences that includes
representatives of the major official denominational power structures. The problem is that the CT’s make-up is not
representative of the global UMC membership. Consider the following: <o:p></o:p></div>

for its liberal theology; no doubt, some of it flows from United Methodism’s
Claremont Seminary in California. And, the Western Jurisdiction has
consistently lagged far behind the other U.S. jurisdictions in how much of its
assigned share of apportionments it pays. <o:p></o:p></div>

Of the five active Western Jurisdiction bishops three (60%)
are presidents of a denominational agency’s board of directors. One of the
remaining two has been elected to become the next president of the Council of
Bishops in 2014. No other region in the UMC comes close to having as large a
portion of its bishops in such prominent leadership positions. One way to
address this inbalance would be to discontinue electing bishops as presidents
of boards and agencies. <o:p></o:p></div>

The Western Jurisdiction is over-represented in the

<b>Three Simple Questions</b><br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>How important is tithing to your spiritual life? And how important is speaking in tongues to your spiritual life?</li>
<li>How often do you hear a sermon on tithing? And how often do you hear a sermon on God's wrath? (Or if you are a preacher, how often do you preach on tithing? And how often do you preach on God's wrath?</li>
<li>How much do you affirmatively discuss tithing? And how much do you affirmatively discuss predestination and election?</li>
</ol>
<br />
With your answers on the questions above, I want you to check out the following graph.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqneIW36tiOM1iHeqCEfV27HfSPsEJ0aUImP-rsJwD_w2_y3K6khUX4IsmpsvanivJyqVH8IHSXXk_vw2BX91Eow6TbHfFgCuGSPMa5KTtM5yJgKyAFvF_T1DsneS2iZyg6R30svZAdlvp/s1600/TitheGraph.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="380" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqneIW36tiOM1iHeqCEfV27HfSPsEJ0aUImP-rsJwD_w2_y3K6khUX4IsmpsvanivJyqVH8IHSXXk_vw2BX91Eow6TbHfFgCuGSPMa5KTtM5yJgKyAFvF_T1DsneS2iZyg6R30svZAdlvp/s640/TitheGraph.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>The Graph Explained</b><br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Using a free Bible software, words were sought in the <b>English Standard Version New Testament</b>.</li>
<li>The graph above represents the number of occurences of some words that have something to do with one of three subjects: <b>tithing, God's wrath, and predestination</b>.</li>
<li>For <b>TITHING</b>, the words "tithe", "tithes", and "tithing" were used. <b>These appeared in 7 verses in 4 chapters of 3 books. </b>[1]</li>
<li>For <b>SPEAKING IN TONGUES</b>, the word "tongues" should occur in the context of spiritual gifts. <b>It appeared in 17 verses in 7 chapters of 3 books. </b>[2]</li>
<li>For <b>GOD'S WRATH</b>, the words "God" and "wrath" should occur together. <b>These appeared in 19 verses in 15 chapters of 6 books. </b>[3]</li>
<li>For <b>PREDESTINATION / ELECTION</b>, the words "predestined", "chosen", and "elect" were used. <b>These appeared in 19 verses in 11 chapters of 9 books. </b>[4]</li>
<li>Except for tithing, some appearances were not counted due to context inconsistencies. While on tithing, all appearances were counted regardless of context. [This implies that, except for tithing, the figures should have been higher if context is not considered.]</li>
</ol>
<br />
Now, were your answers above consistent with the graph?<br />
<br />
<b>Three Radical Statements (At Least to Tithers)</b><br />
Once, I opened my Sunday sermon with these three statements:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li><b>"Pastor Bernard, your pastor, does not believe in tithing."</b></li>
<li><b>"John Wesley, the founding father of your Methodism, also did not believe in tithing."</b> Then I quoted Rev. Wesley in his <a href="http://wesley.nnu.edu/john-wesley/the-sermons-of-john-wesley-1872-edition/sermon-50-the-use-of-money/" target="_blank">Sermon 50: The Use of Money</a>, "Do not stint yourself, like a Jew rather than a Christian, to this or that proportion. 'Render unto God,' <b>not a tenth</b>, not a third, not half, but all that is God's... (emphasis mine)"</li>
<li><b>"Your pastor (and your founder) does not believe in tithing not because 10% is too much but because 10% is too small." </b>I then absurdly rephrase Mark 12:30, "Love the Lord your God with <b>all</b> your heart and with <b>all</b> your soul and with <b>all</b> your mind and with <b>all</b> your strength and with <b>10% </b>of your pocket." It does not fit, does it?</li>
</ol>

<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
Only one
lived perfectly<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
And He's our
God, forsaken for ones He love love love love loves<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
So I won't
depend on good works, no more<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
It's only
Him I boast<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
Since no one
can come perfect, each one falls short<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
It's only
Him I boast<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
I've been
spending days too long, seeing my God in great error<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
Man, heaven
never requires us to toil just to be nearer<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
It's a gift
not a reward<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
Just
surrender, accept grace from God<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
Since just a
sec of sinning makes someone no better person<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
So free
yourself of confidence and come only with faith on<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
Not what we
aim to do, not even our virtue<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
So I won't
depend on good works, no more<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
It's only
Him I boast<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
Open up our
Bible, read with me<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
O, hear the
truth, it will set you free<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
It's not
through your hands and works can heaven be yours<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
So please
don't, please don't, please don't<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
Since no one
can come perfect, cause each one falls short<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
This o' this
o' this is our faith<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;">
I boast <o:p></o:p></div>

<td>In The Juvenilization of American Christianity Thomas Bergler traces the way in which, over seventy-five years, youth ministries have breathed new vitality into four major American church traditions -- African American, Evangelical, Mainline Protestant, and Roman Catholic. Bergler shows too how this "juvenilization" of churches has led to widespread spiritual immaturity, consumerism, and self-centeredness, popularizing a feel-good faith with neither intergenerational community nor theological literacy. Bergler's critique further offers constructive suggestions for taming juvenilization.</td>

<td>What is a church? This can be a difficult question to answer and Christians have offered a variety of perspectives. Gregg Allison thus explores and synthesizes all that Scripture affirms about the new covenant people of God, capturing a full picture of the biblical church. He covers the topics of the church's identity and characteristics; its growth through purity, unity, and discipline; its offices and leadership structures; its ordinances of baptism and the Lord's Supper; and its ministries. Here is a rich approach to ecclesiology consisting of sustained doctrinal reflection and wise, practical application.</td>

<b>Setting the Plot</b><br />
<br />
It was a great miracle. Out of five loaves of bread and two fish, Jesus fed five thousand men (perhaps 20,000 including women and children) and there were even leftovers (John 6:10-13). It seemed to be a great feeding program. It was a wonderful outreach ministry. However, there lies a "sad" ending with this miraculous feeding -- out of the thousands of souls, only twelve remained. No, no, only eleven truly remained with Jesus (John 6:66-70). What caused this "failure" in a potential outstanding outreach program? Following is an imaginary letter from the church of the 21st century addressed to Jesus. (But, I suggest that you read the whole of John 6 before proceeding with the letter.)<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>---=======================---</b></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">Hey, JC!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">I know that you are omnipotent and you are omniscient. That's why I cannot understand how you did miss this great opportunity. We are talking about 5,000-membered congregation here. You started very well in feeding them. I thought you would finish it well. How could you let them slip out of your hand?! There might be wrong. There ought to be wrong on how you do ministry! I reviewed the record of this particular event and please consider my thoughts.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">First, it was wrong that <u><b>you contrasted their flesh much</b></u>. They wanted you to be king (John 6:15) yet you withdrew and ran from them? You could have allowed them to crown you. So what if it is only their selfish desire to do so? Imagine the power and influence that you missed being the king. And one more thing, they were just asking for a little more bread (John 6:26). You could have fed them.. and fed them.. and fed them.. and fed them as much as they want until they feel more comfortable with you before bombarding them with your I AM thingy (John 6:51).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">Second, <u><b>you pointed on eternity too much</b></u>. Your talk about you being the only way to heaven too much was too intoxicating. You should have at least given them a hint that there were other possible ways. And you should have been more creative in attracting them to heaven using self-esteem, or using financial wealth, or using perfect health, or using success in career, or using psychology, some trending issues. You are omniscient and you should have known a way on how to be Christ-centered without mentioning yourself that much.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">Third, <u><b>you disregarded their reponsiveness</b></u>. Response is the most important element in evangelism. They were already asking questions (John 6:28). But you missed it again. At this very point, you should have already asked them to close their eyes and pray after you with a short sinner's prayer. You could have asked them to raise their hands or walk down the aisle. You could have asked John or Thomas perhaps to play a soft music in the background. [By the way, why are your disciples all fishermen, and tax-collectors? You need a musician! It is needed in times like this. You better drop the zealot and find a keyboardist.] Response is the key. You should manipulate the feelings to get the desired response.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">Fourth, <b><u>you used sharp words</u></b> that offended your listeners. You uttered statements like "But there are some of you who do not believe. For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to me unless it has been granted him from the Father (John 6:64-65)." Indirectly, you said that the Father has turned his back on them. That was very harsh. These statements were very sharp. When they didn't believe your words, it would be more kind to respond, "Smile, God loves you," wouldn't it? And you sounded too serious. Couldn't you crack a couple of jokes sometimes to charm their uneasiness a little about GOD's judgment?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">Fifth, <u><b>you presented hard doctrines</b></u>. It was very obvious that they couldn't understand your first strike of hard doctrine (in John 6:51) so they argued (John 6:52). But instead of loosening up, you released your lengthy second strike of hard doctrine (in John 6:53-59). And again, it was obvious that they couldn't grasp it (John 6:60). But like a hard-headed toddler, you even proceeded to an even harder teaching (John 6:61-63). Three strikes, Jesus. Three strikes! Nobody cares about doctrine. You should refrain from teaching hard doctrines.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioQaWCjrQtkqmsWW7ABjwdLlEOHEYDdwAmWuNSzSTv4bLhTlK3IZ0nISFzAfp-E6A8PfjrgaEHGsQBwpZdg94g0vCJGFhSj-RUixCmYxbOsF1D0awoyjzKIyaLiJ29L84DKEEIciBzpAPy/s1600/Megachurch5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioQaWCjrQtkqmsWW7ABjwdLlEOHEYDdwAmWuNSzSTv4bLhTlK3IZ0nISFzAfp-E6A8PfjrgaEHGsQBwpZdg94g0vCJGFhSj-RUixCmYxbOsF1D0awoyjzKIyaLiJ29L84DKEEIciBzpAPy/s1600/Megachurch5.jpg" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">And lastly, <b><u>you downplayed the importance of numbers</u></b>. All of them left. Thousands of potential church members turned away from you. Only 12 remained. But what did you say after seeing them leaving? You said that the group which stayed with you is still one guy too much. Only twelve remained and you still wanted to discount one more soul (John 6:70). Jesus, I know that you know that the ultimate purpose of math is for us to measure how a church grows. Numbers is the ultimate aim of ministries.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">How you do business is very different compared to how we do business here in the 21st century. But at least, we are proud to have made the narrow gate that you created (Matthew 7:13) to be much more wider. We have improved your obsolete methods. We only have one thing in mind now: how to make the church more fleshly and worldly so many more fleshly and worldly souls can come in and feel comfortable.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">Your bestfriend (I'm sorry, "bride" is uncool),</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">the church from 21st century</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">PS: Try sharing some "inspirational" photos on Facebook. A lot of these are not found in your Book but at least, viewers feel better about themselves.</span><br />

It speaks of my passion then on body piercings, tattoos, and Christian rock music. Though I still believe that there are no inherent evils in these, GOD has caused me now to believe that loving the brethren and thinking of their welfare is much more Christlike than winning a debate on secondary non-essential issues.<br />

<b>NEEDLES, STRINGS, AND THE CROSS</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>by: Bernard A. Rosario</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>08 July 2002</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Though you raise your question,<br />
I can’t stand on your position.<br />
This holed ear speaks of my addiction<br />
To the One pierced for my salvation.<br />
I’m a fanatic apprentice of Judah’s Lion<br />
Pleasing the Most High is my cry for satisfaction.<br />
<br />
Do you really think that it’s a sin<br />
To have this worshipping stain on my skin?<br />
It’s beyond my control to design my cover<br />
Of what my pages shout even louder.<br />
You may still insist, “It’s a worldly paint!”<br />
But peep into my heart, I’m still a saint.<br />
<br />
My beats are heavy, yeah, I agree<br />
But they won’t equate with negative solemnity.<br />
Let us draw the lines biblically.<br />
Do you have against my Psalm 33:3?<br />
This so called noise for you touches the core in me,<br />
My obsessed core for Christ that eats me thickly.<br />
<br />
My last words will just be few,<br />
The condition of the heart is essential to God’s crew.<br />
You cannot accuse me of doing a crime<br />
When my steps and the cross are in a poetic rhyme.<br />
If ever the Almighty sees my hands dirtier,<br />
The reason will never be because of this ring below my ear.<br />

<br />
<br />
Today, June 30 of 2012, I married the most beautiful and most CHRIST-centered woman that I know, <a href="http://belovedtulip.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Anna</a>. Here is how we exchanged vows:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>My Vow to Anna</b><br />
<br />
Anna, sinners like me and you cannot really keep a vow<br />
Without the kindness of CHRIST, this will just be for now<br />
<br />
So I will glorify CHRIST when we share our loudest laughter<br />
And still do so when tears roll and you need my shoulder<br />
<br />
I will glorify CHRIST when time again tells we're similar<br />
And still do so when I learn more how diverse we are<br />
<br />
I will glorify CHRIST when you born kids of our own<br />
And still do so when GOD points us to adoption<br />
<br />
I will glorify CHRIST when our boy ranks first or second<br />
And still do so when we will carry him through autism<br />
<br />
I will glorify CHRIST when we are blessed with plenty<br />
And still do so when the refrigerator is empty<br />
<br />
I will glorify CHRIST when I can still carry you upstairs<br />
And still do so when you push me with my wheelchairs<br />
<br />
And since I will glorify CHRIST until my death<br />
So I will love you increasingly until my last breath<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Anna's Vow to Me</b><br />
<br />
A peculiar friendship with you I found<br />
A great blessing since on the cross I was bound<br />
God is great and faithful through all these years<br />
For CHRIST upholds us through laughter and tears<br />
<br />
Today I stand here to utter this vow<br />
Whatever life may bring, to CHRIST alone together we bow<br />
I’m excited to spend this life under your headship<br />
But more is the excitement in this new ministry’s partnership<br />
<br />
I will be your complement in sickness and in health<br />
We will build a home where GOD’s glory is the sole wealth<br />
I will be your bestfriend through mountains and storms<br />
We will hold hands together to have the flow against the norms<br />
<br />
I affirm your leadership as the church is led by CHRIST<br />
I submit my whole to you as the church submits to CHRIST<br />
It is my prayer that we grow together in the increasing knowledge of GOD daily<br />
By the grace of GOD, this union will be for GOD and HIS GLORY solely<br />
<br />

Today marks the second birthday
of Thrown Scabbard. In those two years, the conviction of this blog stays for
the magnification of Christ who bled, died, and had risen for the glory of the
Father and the redemption of my soul.</div>

(Meditations Over a Missing Netbook)<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
This time last year, 2011, I loaned about fifteen thousand
pesos from the university's multi-purpose cooperative. This amount, combined
with half of my thirteenth month pay, I used to purchase an Asus 1015PEM. It
was so beautiful. I see much beauty in it that I find paying for the loan a
no-sweat compared to its great worth. After a year of usage, I still find it so
lovable and have no plan to replace it in the next couple of years perhaps. It
has served me so well in almost everything but most especially in my ministry.
It is my organist, organizer, and sermon archiver. If only it has a soul, it
will definitely hear, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
However, before early afternoon today, my ministry-partner
is nowhere to be found on my desk. Initially, I thought I was a subject of a
practical joke. But I was not met by a practical joker but by the head of
security. It was indeed stolen. I couldn't explain what I felt. I was
perspiring. My heart pumped so fast and I was nauseating. But I remember that
my life and my death are for the sole purpose of exalting CHRIST (Phil. 1:20). </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, I ask, "How do you magnify GOD amidst theft?"
And I think that the best way to do so is to make plain to others that GOD
stays for who He is even amidst "bad" unwanted events in my life.
When my netbook was taken from me...</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>GOD is still THE King<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The Bible is filled with references that pertain to the
sovereignty of GOD. Jeremiah 32:17 for instance says "Ah, Sovereign LORD,
you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched
arm." GOD is King. Nothing happens outside of His will and purpose. It is
extremely comforting to remember that the sole and supreme Ruler is infinitely
wise, massively powerful, and loving to the utmost. That means that the absence
of my netbook now is an outcome of GOD's wise, powerful, loving, and sovereign
rule. I was surprised when it was gone but GOD already knew it would be gone
even before the foundation of the world... yet HE allowed it to be gone. It may
perhaps not be my business now to know why. Where was GOD when my netbook was
taken? He was there in that same place when I purchased my Asus, sitting on His
throne and sovereignly ruling over the entire universe, over things visible and
invisible.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>GOD is still THE Writer<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Romans 8:28 is a Christian darling -- "And we know that
in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been
called according to His purpose." It is not promised that all things ARE
GOOD. Things may be bad. But all things will work together for good. I don't
know how but the thieving of my property will work with other events of my life
for my good. If we go on further with the verse at hand, to verses 29 to 30,
all these things that are happening are woven together by the Almighty to
conclude our glorification. It seems, therefore, to mean that the very netbook
that I love is hindering me from the surety of my glory. GOD in His GODness
knows. I thank GOD that even with all the billions and billions and billions of
concerns that He has, He still managed to mind me and my netbook... that He
writes so meticulously for my own good.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>GOD is still THE
Teacher<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What I love when GOD states His intention to teach us is the
assurance of learning. Let us consider John 14:26 for example, "But the Advocate,
the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all
things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. " or Ezekiel
11:19, "I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them;
I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of
flesh." He says, "I will teach... I will remind... I will
give..." and not "I will try to teach... I will try to remind... I
will try to give..." When GOD really wants to teach us, He will never fail
in doing so. We will surely learn. And GOD, in His creativity, will certainly
utilize different events in our life just to teach us. And I must say, I learn
today.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>GOD is still THE
Judge<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Justice presupposes that all sins and transgressions should
be accounted for. "For God will bring every deed into judgment, including
every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil (Eccles. 12:14)." And since
all have sinned (Rom.3:23), all will face judgment for doing evil and being
evil. If the one who have taken my netbook is an unbeliever [which is most
probably], he will pay for eternity for this transgression that he has
committed (Matt. 10:28). But when the grace of GOD finds its way to the heart
of the thief, his sins in general and this sin of stealing in particular would be
included in the penalty that Christ has paid (2 Cor. 5:21). In short, I did not
really lose anything because GOD will bring justice. He is still the righteous
Judge.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>GOD is still THE
Grace-Giver<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I deserve nothing but the fiery wrath of GOD. He wants me to
be perfect as He is (Matt. 5:48). But I have a problem; GOD is infinitely holy
and infinitely perfect. I will never ever meet His demands. So, even the
slightest of my disobediences reserves for me a space in hell. That is where I
truly and rightfully belong. But because of Christ paying the penalty due to
me, I will not face such terror... a very abundant mercy. And not only that, He
has given me life -- I owe to His grace. I have a beautiful family -- I owe to
His grace. I have a lot of things that I enjoy now that I don't really deserve
-- I owe to His grace. So when my netbook was gone, I am still standing on a
space that is a product of GOD's mercy and grace... so distant from the hell
that I deserve.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>GOD is still THE
Treasure<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
GOD is enough. He is more than enough. When my heart
despairs for my lost netbook, it reveals that GOD is not enough for me but
actually needs some other accessories. Psalm 73:25 is my youth fellowship's
favorite, "Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire
besides you." I or we strive to have a heart like the Apostle Paul to
consider everything, that is all things, as loss compared to the surpassing
value of knowing Christ Jesus (Phil. 3:8). Whether it be my netbook, my
cellphone, my other toys, my foods, my clothes, my books [ouch], my profession,
my friends, my family, my future, my Anna, or everything, may I be able to
display that I value all of these as nothings when compared to the surpassing
value of knowing CHRIST.</div>

Pangasinan Central District so it is just proper from me to thank and to
commend them for exerting much physical, financial, and intellectual resources
just to ensure a GOD-glorifying, Christ-centered, Spirit-filled,

When you search Amazon’s best-selling Christian books, one
of the authors who hit the list is Timothy Keller, senior pastor at <a href="http://www.redeemer.com/" target="_blank">Redeemer Presbyterian Church</a> in New York and
founder of Redeemer Church Planting Center. But this post is not intended to
hover on his influential books but instead on the books that influenced him.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In the Reform and Resurge Conference of 2006, Keller
preached on <a href="http://theresurgence.com/2006/07/18/doing-justice-audio" target="_blank">“Doing
Justice”</a> wherein he nailed my ear to his introduction:</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div class="MsoNormal">
“When you listen and read one thinker, you become a clone.
If you really spend a lot of time listening and reading two thinkers, you
become confused. If you really spend a lot of time in reading and listening to
about ten thinkers, you'll start to develop your own voice. And you listen and
read two or three hundred thinkers, you become wise and develop your voice.
However, the first couple that confused you... always stay with you.”</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
I became curious of the books that perhaps “confused”
Keller so I contacted <a href="http://timothykeller.com/" target="_blank">www.timothykeller.com</a>
asking for a list of Keller’s recommended books. I received the following
entries from Tim Cox, Digital Engagement Manager of <a href="http://redeemercitytocity.com/" target="_blank">Redeemer City to City</a>:</div>

Self-centeredness and loving others had always been

think about your own personal image. However, GOD is really weird. He
harmoniously maintains His passion for His personal glory and His passion for
our personal gain. I will try to illustrate this using a very familiar story.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div class="MsoNormal">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW2uB_DPxMyhLnWtojGsmJa6kvc6kvP2KzbcUBszKg4hCm_Cm09bx2K-GYn6D7ppHWNMcr7dDmbFZseFl8EcDh9HdG-7c71dRvK78rZgkUzxdl4j80Ljwm2bmoBZVb-Kj1VWrF2FLMYD4h/s1600/LazarusComeForth.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW2uB_DPxMyhLnWtojGsmJa6kvc6kvP2KzbcUBszKg4hCm_Cm09bx2K-GYn6D7ppHWNMcr7dDmbFZseFl8EcDh9HdG-7c71dRvK78rZgkUzxdl4j80Ljwm2bmoBZVb-Kj1VWrF2FLMYD4h/s320/LazarusComeForth.jpg" width="320" /></a>1Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany,
the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2It was Mary who anointed
the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus
was ill. 3So the sisters sent to him, saying, "Lord, he whom you
love is ill." 4But when Jesus heard it he said, "This
illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of
God may be glorified through it." 5Now Jesus loved Martha and
her sister and Lazarus. 6So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he
stayed two days longer in the place where he was. (John 11:1-6)</div>
</blockquote>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>The Sandwich</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Lazarus and her two sisters are very close to the heart of
the Lord. Christ’s love for them is in verse 3 and Christ’s love for them is in
verse 5. And there is a sandwich: Christ’s love in verses 3 and 5 sandwiches the
glory of GOD in verse 4. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>The So-Dilemma</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Verse 6 will give a dilemma for the critical reader. Most literal Bible translations initiate verse 6 with a “so” or with a “therefore.”
“So” implies a transition from reason to outcome. </div>
<ul>
<li>I studied hard so I passed. </li>
<li>I was soaking wet yesterday so I am sick
today. </li>
<li>Anna loves pink so she wears pink almost
daily. </li>
</ul>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Verse 5 is then most likely the reason for the outcome in
verse 6. I, therefore, paraphrase, “Christ intensely loves the three SO, when
Lazarus was dying, He made sure that he would die (He stayed two more days).”
If you think I am implying that it was Christ’s very love for them that wanted
Lazarus dead, then you got my point. Jesus loved Lazarus much SO He wanted him
dead.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>The Love that Wanted Lazarus Dead</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This was a problem to me and I believe it still is a problem
to some. The problem arises primarily because of our poor definition of love. For
most people, to love is to desire no harm for the loved. But true love is much
more than just desiring no harm – it is desiring the highest possible good for
the loved. And there is no higher possible good than GOD Himself. Jesus, in His
love, wanted Lazarus dead because He wanted them to see the glory of GOD (verse
4). I strongly believe that these three whom Jesus loved never had a weaker
faith after seeing this display of GOD’s glory. They had received a gift
infinitely more valuable than life from the One who loves them much.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
GOD desires to show us His glory. And His glory most of the
time shines the brightest when our pits are the deepest. He Himself digs these
pits and He Himself puts us in the deepest. And when He finally decides to show
His glory, He will shine the brightest. He loves to show His glory because He
loves you and wants to attract you to Himself. He loves you much and may
perhaps want you dead.</div>
